Please Look Away (2019)
live projection + CRT-monitor video installation
Please Look Away invites the viewer to engage with the “surveillance aesthetic”, which encompasses the affective experience of being watched by an unknown source, and the pop-culture signifiers of latent technological developments in surveillance.
There is an insidious suggestion in the inclusion of both a CRT television monitor and webcam/computer screen, that the levels at which users and bodies are tracked have graduated in terms of pervasiveness and sophistication. The viewer observes that the communication between themselves, the monitor and the camera is fraught with cognitive delays and digital lag. The technology, however, only sees a body, a face, and the space around it as indexical information to be dispatched. In searching for their reflection, the viewer comes face-to-face with impersonal multiples.
