Pristine (2019)
3:00 minute loop, sculptural video installation: gelatin block + smartphone + mirror
Pristine frames the handheld device as an organic record subject to the frenzy of overuse. A gelatin block makes reference to the screen as a skin built to interface with skin - a vessel for viscera. Its quivering responses to the impact of sounds created by fingers on a smartphone reveal the violence inherent in dependence. The screen is intended as pristine matter, yet it spills its contents in prostration to the ugliness of touch.
